ABS PUBLICATIONS AVAILABLE FREE ON THE WEB

From 1 July, the range of free content on the ABS web site was expanded to include:
  • electronic publications (PDF and HTML based content);
  • electronic 'publication tables', i.e. tables in spreadsheet or data-cube format which otherwise would have been included in a printed/PDF publication; and in particular
  • electronic State/Territory 'publication tables' that complement national 'publication tables'.

The ABS is also considering adding to the free-on-the-web content by the end of the year. This would include most remaining standard priced products i.e. time series spreadsheets and other spreadsheets and data cubes. Further work is still to be completed before a final decision is made to confirm what additional data will be free.

Changes to subscription services

The existing free email notification service is the sole remaining subscription service for standard ABS products.
  • Hard copy publication subscriptions are being phased out. Existing subscriptions will be allowed to run their normal course, but no new subscriptions or renewals will be accepted after 1 July and subscribers will have the option of cancelling their subscriptions, and receiving a proportionate refund.
  • Email-based delivery of publications ceased on 30 June 2005. Current subscribers are instead able to use the free email notification service, which advises when statistical and other releases are available for downloading from the ABS web site.
  • E-commerce facilities on the ABS web site and the telephone enquiry service will continue to service one-off orders for hard copy publications.
  • Separate arrangements to meet legal deposit and other library network related obligations are being made by the ABS Library.

AusStats

AusStats will continue as a service to subscribers in Tasmania, providing convenient access to ABS products (whether free or priced), via the Internet. However, with publications now available free on the ABS web site and further data products expected to be available free-of-charge from later this year, the ABS expects a number of subscribers will not reach the download-value-limit specified in their Agreement. In such cases, they will either receive a credit towards their next year's AusStats subscription, or a refund if they decide not to renew their AusStats subscription, based on the unused portion of their respective download-value-limits. All AusStats contracts and agreements are now being reviewed and subscribers will be contacted to clarify arrangements shortly.

AUSSTATS TRAINING FOR STATE GOVERNMENT STAFF

AusStats is the ABS's web-based information service - providing the full range of ABS products online, updated daily. Officers from the ABS in Tasmania are currently running AusStats training for
all interested state government staff. This offer is made in conjunction with the introduction of AusStats access across the whole of state government. This new arrangement will enable all staff with internet access to download ABS publications, spreadsheets and data cubes.

The training will introduce participants to AusStats. It explains what AusStats is, shows users how to access, navigate through and find publications, time series spreadsheets, datacubes and census data. A basic introduction to using SuperTABLE is also included. Sessions can be tailored to be a demonstration only or a demonstration followed by a hands-on session using exercises.

Nominations for the training are being coordinated through the Tasmanian Statistical Advisory Committee (TSAC) representatives in each agency. If you don't know who your TSAC representative is please email
wendy.cannell@abs.gov.au or phone (03) 6222 5985.TASMANIA TOGETHER

The ABS is continuing its statistical support for
Tasmania Together - the state's long term strategic planning process. Recent ABS activity has included collaboration with the Progress Board Secretariat on a process for identifying a sub-set of the Tasmania Together benchmarks for use in key indicator reports. This has involved sorting community issues into Issue Areas. The Issue Areas have some similarity with the progress dimensions used in Measures of Australia's Progress. It is anticipated that an early report in this format will be used in the Public Information Package currently under development for a five year review of Tasmania Together. The community consultation phase of the five year review will commence in August 2005.

NATIONAL REGIONAL PROFILE

The latest National Regional Profile (NRP) was released on the ABS web site on 29 March 2005. As with the earlier version, users can use the drill-down map facility or choose their selected region's name from a pick-list.

The most significant change in the NRP release is that it now has a five year time series (1999-2003, on ASGC 2003 boundaries), which will allow users to see changes in economic and social characteristics of their region during that time.

Other changes in the NRP release include:
  • new data on sources of income, which combines Australian Taxation Office data and income support payments (cat. no. 6524.0, released in January 2005); and
  • data on the value of agricultural production from the 2000-01 Agricultural Census (cat. no. 7121.0).

The National Regional Profile does not include data from the 2001 Census of Population and Housing, but there are links on the NRP web pages to download the Basic Community Profile for a region of interest. Information from the Census also remains available through the 2001 Census Page on the ABS website.
NATIONAL DATA NETWORK

The National Data Network (NDN) is a national platform for acquiring, sharing and integrating data relevant to policy and research. This initiative promotes improved integration and consistent systems across government by facilitating greater collaboration between data providers and faster access to data. It provides a distributed library of data holdings relevant to policy analysis and research. Whilst data is held and controlled by their Custodian organisations, the NDN provides a complete catalogue of available data sources to allow users to easily search for data holdings which have been made available.

Conceptually, organisations can contribute to the NDN in a range of ways e.g.:
  • publish data to the NDN;
  • contribute to the development of protocols, such as those for metadata;
  • develop additional statistical services to link into the network;
  • provide administrative support for aspects of the network.

ABS is currently discussing with The Department of Premier and Cabinet, the possible involvement of the State Government in the demonstration phase of the NDN.
