TAXATION REVENUE KEY FIGURES

A feature of the Australian federal system is that the Commonwealth Government levies and collects all income tax, from individuals as well as from enterprises. It also collects a portion of other taxes, including taxes on the provision of goods and services. The revenue base of state governments consists of taxes on property, on employers' payroll, and on the provision and use of goods and services. The sole source of taxation revenue for local governments is taxes on property.

Total taxation revenue collected in Australia increased $18,766m (5%) from $415,119m in 2012–13 to $433,885m in 2013–14. Over the same period, taxes on income increased $6,705m (3%), while taxes on taxes on provision of goods and services increased $6,605m (7%) and taxes on property increased $4,518m (13%). In 2013–14, taxes on income represented 57% of total taxation revenue for all levels of government and taxes on provision of goods and services, including the goods and services tax (GST), represented 24%.

TAXATION REVENUE AUSTRALIA

This publication contains statistics of taxation revenue collected by all levels of government in Australia for the periods 2004-05 to 2013-14. The taxation revenue statistics presented are for the general government sector and include taxes received from public corporations (i.e. government owned/controlled corporations).

Time series of these data are available on the ABS website.

This publication contains a section on adjusted measures of government revenue, which provides analytical measures designed to facilitate an understanding of the level of government at which revenue is used rather than collected.

CHANGES TO DATA CUBE FORMAT

Some minor table formatting changes to the data cube have been introduced with the release of this publication as indicated in the December Quarter 2014 release of Government Finance Statistics 5519.0.55.001. The changes include the insertion of blank lines, formatting emphasis changes and clearer 'total' and 'sub-total' item descriptions to improve readability. Users who extract data from the data cube tables using Excel formulas or by other computerised means should review and adjust their processes as necessary. Some row numbers have changed.
