JANUARY KEY POINTS

SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals during January 2018 (753,700 movements) remained steady at 0.0% when compared with December 2017 (753,500 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.1% in both November 2017 and December 2017. The current trend estimate for arrivals is 5.7% higher than in January 2017.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During January 2018, short-term visitor arrivals (760,200 movements) increased 2.4% compared with December 2017 (742,800 movements). This followed monthly decreases of 0.1% in November 2017 and 1.7% in December 2017.
  • Original estimates: There were 702,500 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia in January 2018.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident returns during January 2018 (888,100 movements) increased 0.1% compared with December 2017 (887,100 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.2% in both November 2017 and December 2017. The current trend estimate for returns is 2.6% higher than in January 2017.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During January 2018, short-term resident returns (894,100 movements) increased 2.2% compared with December 2017 (874,800 movements). This followed a monthly increase of 0.8% in November 2017 and a monthly decrease of 1.9% in December 2017.
  • Original estimates: There were 1,336,700 short-term resident returns to Australia in January 2018.

REVISIONS IN THIS ISSUE

Investigations by the ABS and the Department of Home Affairs have identified quality issues with the capture and coding of state or territory of stay/residence from incoming passenger cards from July 2017 onwards. Data from the cards is currently being re-processed to correct these issues and will be re-supplied to the ABS. Once this is complete, ABS will revise OAD statistics from July 2017 onwards.
