In 2010-11 total numbers of sheep and lambs in Australia increased by 7% to 73.1 million compared with 2009-10. All states registered a slight increase in sheep numbers except Western Australia where sheep numbers fell by 5% to 14 million head.
Sheep numbers across Australia have fallen sharply in the last twenty years. This trend appears across all states with numbers falling significantly after 1990 due to poor market prospects for wool. From a high of 180 million in 1970, numbers fell to 68 million in 2009-10, which was the smallest Australian sheep flock size since 1905.
