INCOME GENERATED BY TASMANIAN INDUSTRY In 2008-09 Tasmanian industry (excluding the Financial and Insurance Services industry) generated $38.1 billion in sales and service income and paid $6.7 billion in wages and salaries to 194,000 people. Of all industry-generated sales and service income, 21.7% was produced by Tasmanian manufacturers while another 18.1% was created by retail trade and another 10.5% was produced by wholesale trade. The construction industry generated 8.3% of sales and service income while agriculture, forestry and fishing generated 6.9% in the same year. AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION In 2008-09 the gross value of agricultural commodities produced in Tasmania was $1,161 million. This was an increase of 1.3% on the 2007-08 figure ($1,146 million). The value of crops increased by 10.7%, from $503 million to $557 million, while the value of livestock slaughterings and other disposals increased 6.8%, from $229 million to $245 million. Livestock products (which mainly consist of wool, milk and eggs) decreased by 13.2%, from $413 million to $359 million. MINING In 2008-09, total mineral commodities produced in Tasmania were worth $1,372 million. This was an increase of 17.0% from the previous twelve months production of $1,173 million. The value of metallic mineral production increased from $1,050 million to $1,247 million, an increase of 18.7%. In the same period, production of industrial minerals increased from $52 million to $62 million, and construction materials decreased from $71 million to $63 million.
RETAIL TURNOVER In 2009-10, the value of retail turnover in Tasmania was $5,287 million. This represented an increase of 2.6% from the previous year, and an increase of 21.6% since 2005-06. In 2009-10 food retailing contributed $2,183 million of the total value of retail turnover (41.3%), followed by household good retailing $1,095 (20.7%) and cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services $515 million (9.7%). Since 2005-06, retail turnover for cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services has increased by 42.8%, followed by food retailing (34.1%), and pharmaceutical, cosmetic and toiletry retailing (26.0%).
TOURIST ACCOMMODATION There were 1.3 million guest arrivals in Tasmania during 2009-10. This was a decrease of 3.1% from the previous year and an increase of 5.1% since 2005-06. Takings from tourist accommodation establishments increased by 16.2% from 2005-06 to 2009-10, from $163 million to $189 million, with the average takings per room per night rising from $120.02 in 2005-06 to $130.62 in 2009-10.
BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION In 2009-10, the number of dwellings approved for construction in Tasmania totalled 3,233, including 2,548 new houses and a further 676 new other residential buildings. The value of total building approved in 2009-10 amounted to $1.6 billion, including $801 million of residential building and $753 million non-residential building approved for construction. The private sector accounted for 77.0% of the value of all building work done in 2009-10. Nearly half of this was from the building of new houses. Around 3.6% of the total value of public sector building was invested in new homes. Building activity in 2009-10 may have been affected by initiatives within the Government stimulus package, including the "Building the Education Revolution" (BER) program and Social Housing Initiatives as well as other developments associated with global economic conditions.
ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION The total value of engineering construction work done in Tasmania in 2009-10 was $964 million, a decrease of 3.6% from 2008-09. Of this, $286 million or 29.7% was carried out by the private sector. Electricity generation, transmission and pipelines represented 39.9% of the total value of engineering construction work (23.5% of the private sector and 46.9% of the public sector), followed by roads, highways and subdivisions (19.5%) and water storage and supply, sewerage and drainage (15.4%).
RATEABLE LAND USE As at January 2011, the total rateable land area in Tasmania was 4.2 million hectares. Primary production accounted for 88.2% of this land (3.7 million ha), 5.3% was residential (0.2 million ha) and 3.3% was for community use (0.1 million ha). BUSINESS COUNTS As at June 2009, there were 37,951 businesses operating in Tasmania, of which 58.8% were non-employing. A further 21.9% of businesses employed 1-4 employees and 14.1% of businesses employed 5-19 employees. Only 0.3% of businesses in Tasmania employed 200 or more employees. Of all businesses in Tasmania at June 2009, 17.1% were engaged in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries, 15.4% in the construction industry, 9.2% in rental, hiring and real estate services and 8.4% in retail trade.
