UPCOMING TRAINING AND EVENTS SEMINAR: EXPERIMENTAL LAND ACCOUNT Following the release of Land Account: Great Barrier Reef Region, Experimental Estimates, 2011 (cat. no. 4609.0.55.001), the ABS will hold a free information session at 200 Collins Street, Hobart on the morning of Monday 21 March 2011. The release of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) land account is part of ABS work in developing an integrated set of environmental accounts. Also as part of this, the ABS will shortly release an Experimental Land Account for Tasmania. The GBR land account provides tables on area and value of land by main use and industry as well as changes in land cover over time. Information from a land account can be used to assist the debate on sustainable development, environmental well-being and related economic and social issues. Examples of use include:
SEMINAR: BUSINESS DEMOGRAPHY Business demography data focuses on measuring changes in the counts and characteristics of different types of businesses (e.g. small business, sole proprietors) and changes in the demographics of business operators (e.g. age, gender, country of origin). The publication Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits, Jun 2007 to Jun 2009 (cat. no. 8165.0) shows the type of data available. A free seminar will be presented by statisticians specialising in business data and attendees will be given previously unreleased state level data including: business counts by industry, employment size ranges, annual turnover size ranges, counts of businesses entering and exiting and operation and business growth rates over time. Attendees will be given the opportunity to provide feedback on possible improvements to ABS business demography data. The seminar will be held from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm on Wednesday 30 March 2011 at 200 Collins Street, Hobart. The seminar will be held from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm on Thursday 5 May 2011 at 200 Collins Street, Hobart. People wishing to attend should contact Terri Fox on (03) 6222 5835 or by email at terri.fox@abs.gov.au WORKSHOPS: NEW STATISTICAL GEOGRAPHY ABS Geography Branch representatives will be visiting Hobart and Launceston in late May 2011 to conduct free seminars on the new Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). The publication Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS): Volume 1 - Main Structure and Greater Capital City Statistical Areas, July 2011 (cat. no. 1270.0.55.001) was released on 23 December 2010. The new geography will be used for future releases of location-based ABS statistics, with it being used for the first time for counts from the 2011 Population Census. People who are users of ABS statistics are encouraged to attend by contacting Chris Carswell on (03) 6222 5848 or by emailing him at chris.carswell@abs.gov.au Custodians of databases with geo-referenced data may also find the presentations of great value. WORKSHOP: MEASURES OF AUSTRALIA'S PROGRESS In 2011, the ABS is launching a wide consultation to discover what goals and aspirations Australians have for Australia in terms of national progress. In recent decades, there has been a growing view that understanding progress involves bringing together measures from across the areas of social, economic and environmental activity. The ABS was the first national statistical agency to move forward with this notion, first releasing Measures of Australia's Progress (MAP)(cat. no. 1370.0) in 2002, providing an informative suite of information for those wishing to assess some key aspects of national progress. Since then, national and international interest in measuring progress has accelerated, intensifying particularly over the last decade and the last few years. Taking this increased interest into account, the ABS is looking to further evolve our MAP publication. For this reason, we are carrying out a consultation to ask Australians what goals they have for Australia, so MAP can continue to reflect what is important to Australians. The MAP team will visit the ABS Tasmanian Regional Office in the first of half 2011 to present more information and conduct a workshop to gather feedback from interested people or groups.
