    OVERVIEW

    Residential and Workplace Mobility, and Implications for Travel, NSW and Vic., October 2008 (cat no: 3240.0)

    This publication summarises results from the 2008 State Supplementary Survey - Residential and Workplace Mobility, and Implications for Travel. The survey was conducted during October 2008 throughout New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria (Vic.). The survey measured the demographic characteristics of movers and non-movers; the reasons why people changed their usual residence; the reasons why people changed their current suburb of employment; and the modes of transport typically used to travel to the current suburb of employment.

    PURPOSE

    Each year in October the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducts individual state specific surveys as part of the Monthly Population Survey (MPS) program. Residential and Workplace Mobility, and Implications for Travel was the October 2008 State Supplementary Survey topic for NSW and Vic..

    SCOPE

    The Residential and Workplace Mobility, and Implications for Travel survey was conducted as a supplement to the ABS Monthly Population Survey (MPS). The MPS is based on a multistage area sample of private dwellings (houses, flats, etc) and a list sample of non-private dwellings (hotels, motels etc). This survey excluded non-private dwellings. Information was collected by either a face-to-face or telephone interview from one responsible adult per household. Respondents answered questions on behalf of all household members. The survey was conducted using seven-eighths of the full sample of private dwellings in NSW and Vic. that were included in the MPS. The following people were excluded:

    • persons aged under 18 years;
    • members of the permanent defence forces;
    • certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments, customarily excluded from censuses and surveys;
    • overseas residents in Australia;
    • members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependents) stationed in Australia;
    • private dwellings containing visitors only;
    • visitors to the household; and
    • residents of non-private dwellings such as hospitals, hotels, motels and prisons.

    DATA DETAIL

    Conceptual framework

    Persons: Structure, number of bedrooms, tenure and landlord type at the current dwelling, whether lived in a previous dwelling in the last three years and it's characteristics, whether had a different suburb of usual residence in the last three years and its characteristics (including straight line distance from both the capital city's central business district and the new suburb of usual residence).

    Employed persons: Whether usual travel to work was to one specific suburb and the characteristics of that suburb, whether had a previous suburb of employment (or had previously worked from home or without a fixed location) in the last three years and it's characteristics.

    Persons not employed: Whether had a previous (i.e. most recent) suburb of employment (or had previously worked from home or without a fixed location) in the last three years and the characteristics of that suburb.

    Persons employed in the last three years whose usual travel to work was to one specific suburb: Modes of transport used, and straight line and road distance, to work for each possible combination of travel routes (in order) over the last 3 years between the current or previous suburb of usual residence and the current or previous suburb of employment.

    Estimates of total persons and proportion for each population as well as estimates of mean and median for estimates of distance are available. These estimates can be disaggregated by demographic and other data items from the Labour Force Survey to which this survey is a supplement.
