PREFACE

AIM OF THIS PUBLICATION

This publication documents the concepts, sources and methods used in the compilation of the suite of residential property price indexes published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This publication also provides insight into the practical challenges that the ABS encounters in compiling these indexes and how it deals with these challenges.

The update to this publication reflects the outcomes of the ABS Residential Property Price Index Review. The outcomes of this review were announced in the Feature Article: Implementation of the ABS Residential Property Price Index Review Outcomes and changes implemented in the March quarter 2015 Residential Property Price Index publication (cat. no. 6416.0).

This publication aims to provide users of Australia's residential property price indexes with an explanation of:

    • the historical background of the ABS residential property price indexes;
    • their underlying conceptual framework;
    • their relationship to other economic statistics;
    • the data sources and methods used to compile the indexes; and
    • the presentation and publication of the price indexes.
In addition to information on the indexes, this publication contains an explanation of:
    • the compilation of figures on the total value of the dwelling stock; and
    • additional outputs which are compiled from the same data source as the indexes.

RELEASE OF RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY PRICE INDEXES DATA

The residential property price indexes are compiled quarterly by the ABS for the quarters ending in March, June, September and December each year. The quarterly index numbers are released in the Residential Property Price Indexes: Eight Capital Cities (cat. no. 6416.0) approximately twelve weeks after the end of the reference quarter. The release of the price indexes aligns with the release of the ABS Australian National Accounts: Finance and Wealth (cat. no. 5232.0) publication.
