    OVERVIEW
The survey includes all non-government management units classified to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) Classes 9519 (Personal and household goods hiring nec) and 7743 (Plant hiring or leasing). The Hire industries were identified as two industries for which there was very limited information available to national accountants on the income and expenses (ie the structure) of the industry. It is part of an annual program of surveys targeting the Services Sector of the economy.

The surveys include data items specifically tailored to each industry to satisfy the following requirements:

    • an income breakdown, including rental income by broad product line
    • a detailed breakdown of expenditure
    • a detailed breakdown of employment data (full-time /part-time, male/female)
    • balance sheet information on assets and liabilities
    • State data for key items ie employment, wages and salaries and total income

    PURPOSE
The objective of the survey is to provide the fundamental base line data necessary to understand the nature of the hiring industries and to provide a benchmark for measuring change over time.

    SCOPE
The scope of the survey is all non-government management units on the ABS Business Register as at June 2000 classified to ANZSIC Class 9519 (Personal and household goods hiring nec) and ANZSIC Class 7743 (Plant hiring or leasing).

    Classifications
    ANZSIC
According to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) (1292.0), each business unit is classified to a single industry. The industry allocated is based on an estimate expenditure on the primary activity of the management unit irrespective of whether a range of activities or a single activity is undertaken by the unit. For example, a management unit which expends most of its financial resources on hire/leasing of plant would have all operations included in the aggregates and ratios for the Plant hire and leasing industry, even if significant secondary activities (e.g. transport) were undertaken.

ANSZIC has been used to classify management units included in this survey. Statistics in publications are generally presented at the ANZSIC Class level.
