    OVERVIEW

    This collection gathered information from symphony orchestras, chamber and choral groups and performing arts organisations. Financial and employment data as well as details on performances and paid attendances of both government subsidised and other organisations were produced.

    PURPOSE

    The collection was undertaken to measure the number, variety and dollar value of Australia's symphony orchestras, chamber and choral groups and performing arts organisations. Principal users of the data are the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS) and the Cultural Ministers Council.

    SCOPE

    Organisations whose predominant activity was in the Theatre, Opera and Music Theatre, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber and Choral Groups or Dance categories of the National Culture-Leisure Industry Statistical Framework (Fourth Edition) published by the Cultural Ministers Council Statistical Advisory Group were considered for inclusion in the collection.

    These organisations were only included in the survey if during the reference year, they;

    • received a Government (Commonwealth/State/Local Government or Australia Council) grant of $500 or more, or
    • employed or contracted any persons, or
    • received income amounting to $50,000 or more.
