Despite the loss of some export markets in Europe and Asia in recent years, onions in Tasmania are still mainly grown for export. Most onions are grown on the fertile soils in the north-west and almost all the rest are grown around Scottsdale in the north-east.

In 2004-05, Tasmanian farmers produced about one quarter of Australia's total onion crop (72,500 tonnes).

In 2004-05, two thirds of all onions produced in Tasmania came from the Mersey-Lyell Statistical Division (47,600 tonnes).
