Most of Tasmania's milk cattle are found in the north-west around Circular Head, Meander Valley, Wynyard and King Island. There is also a concentration of milk cattle in the north-east throughout the Dorset municipality.

Tasmania's milk cattle herd increased marginally in the year ending 30 June 2005 to be at 191,000.
