Purpose
To provide data in respect of each Government rail system on aggregate energy use and average energy efficiency of rail freight.

Description
Data comprise estimates, for each financial year, of liquid fuel use and electricity use for freight and passenger tasks, average rail freight energy efficiency, and total Federal fuel excise paid by rail systems.

Data are collected by mail questionnaire from six government rail systems.

  • Electricity use by freight;
  • Diesel use by passengers;
  • Electricity use by passengers;
  • Freight tasks in tonne kilometres;
  • Rail freight energy efficiency; and
  • Federal fuel excise.

Australia, State rail system.

Frequency of Data Availability
Data are released annually.

Data are available from 1989-90.
