Lane is the Acting General Manager leading the Statistical Business Transformation Program (SBTP). The SBTP is delivering new and enhanced statistical capabilities to allow the ABS to transform the production of statistical products. Lane has been a Senior Executive with the ABS for over 10 years, during this time he has held a variety of roles. Prior to taking on the role of GM SBTP in July 2017 Lane was the Program Manager for Technology Capability, providing ICT leadership to the SBTP. Lane has held other Senior ICT roles at the ABS including Program Manager for Technology Infrastructure and Program Manager for Technology Strategy and Planning. Non ICT Senior Executive roles have included Regional Director for the ABS Victorian office where Lane provided leadership to the Melbourne office, managed the relationship with Victorian State Government, managed the National Crime and Justice statistical program and managed 2011 Census field operations for Victoria. Lane has also been the Program Manager for ABS Integrated Collection Branch where he managed ABS Data collection activities including management of ABS field interviewers, the Provider Contact centre, Administrative Data Acquisition and the collection of Business Survey Data.

Prior to being promoted to the SES Lane held a variety of roles within Technology Services Division, largely in the areas of IT infrastructure and Security (both ICT and Protective). Before joining the ABS in 1999 Lane worked at the Australian Customs Services, initially as an APS employee and then as an employee of Electronic Data Systems (EDS) Australia.
