Senior Staff Biography - Gemma Van Halderen, First Assistant Statistician, Population, Education and Data Integration Division

Gemma Van Halderen is responsible for the ABS’s Population, Education and Data Integration Division. This Division has a diverse range of activities including responsibility for measuring whether life in Australia is getting better, Australia's official population estimates, the measurement of wellbeing and sustainable development, regional statistics, and ABS Geospatial strategies. All of these programs touch on areas of interest to governments and the community.

Gemma has been a member of the Senior Executive Service for seven years. Her interests are in improving the range, accessibility and visibility of statistics and data, as well as leaving the ABS and APS a better place than when she started. From 2010-2012, Gemma was chair of the ABS Graduate Selection Panel. Gemma is currently President of the ABS ACT Social Club and a member of the ABS Audit Committee, and champion of people capability programs.

Gemma has a BSc (Hons) from the Australian National University majoring in mathematical statistics, is an Accredited Statistician, and an elected member of the International Statistics Institute. She is a member of the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) Young Statistician's Prize Committee, and the 2014 IAOS Conference Program Committee. She was recently appointed a member of the NSW Skills Board, and is a finalist in the Telstra Business Women's Award for the ACT.
