Beginning your application – tips for first time applicants to the ABS
Your email address is our primary method of contact with you, in many ways it is more important than your name. Ensure that this is correct, current, reliable and accessible. Some web based email systems can become 'full' quite quickly. Make sure you understand any limitations that may apply to your email account.
You will need to use the same email address you initially used to register for the ABS Careers site to access your current applications, any communication and forms we send you will be to this email account.
If you have forgotten your password you can reset it via the login page. The ABS National Recruitment team will not be able to reset your password for you. See below FAQ for information on how to reset your password.
Save your application regularly as you proceed through the steps as the site does “time-out” after a short while.
Below you will find some of the frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the temporary employment Skills and Talent Asset Register (STAR).
We roll over the Register every 12 months to keep the talent pool fresh and to give an opportunity for interested candidates to update their applications.
The Register is usually open for 12 months. After this time the Register will close and you will need to reapply to any future Register(s).
It depends on what your experience is and the grade/level/salary you are seeking. The majority of our temporary employment opportunities are at the APS levels 1 - 5, with a salary range between $42,000 p.a. and $79,000 p.a. plus Superannuation. Most of these positions are administrative or entry level management. However, we do look for candidates with technical skills at higher levels, for example Case Managers, Graphic Designers, IT Specialists and Senior Managers and those with specialised analytical and methodological skills.
Our hiring managers will search the Register for candidates based on the skills and experience they require for a position(s). When you are being considered for a position the hiring manager will contact you directly, usually by telephone, however most of the official communication from the ABS (such as job offers) will occur by email.
We would like to express that this Register is to express your interest in working for the ABS on a temporary basis. Once you have applied the ABS will only contact you if a potentially suitable position arises.
Yes, it is a requirement of the ABS that you have your Australian citizenship at the time of employment. If successful in gaining a position, you must be able to prove Australian Citizenship with original documentation on your first day with the ABS. Currently the ABS only accepts electronic/online applications for all positions. We suggest that if you are having trouble applying online that you call us on 1800 249 583, or alternatively, your local Library should have assistance available; to find your local Library you can search this website http://www.nla.gov.au/apps/libraries/
Yes, each Register is open for 12 months. After a Register closes all applicants to the closed Register will no longer be considered for future temporary positions.
Each Register is unique, with changes occurring to the application form each time a new Register is released. You will need to follow the steps in the Register application form for information on how to apply.
By visiting the Current Vacancies page you will need to use the navigation panel on the top of the page to get to the “login” screen. On this screen you will find a link to reset your password. After you click the link to have your password reset it will ask you to input your email address and submit. The password reset link will be sent by email to the inbox of the email address you used to sign up for ABS Careers. Once you retrieve this email you will be provided with a link to a page where you can create a new password for your account.
The ABS National Recruitment team cannot reset your password.
Once you have successfully logged in to the ABS Careers site, you will notice the link “My Profile”. Click the link, it will take you to a page with your current applications. A link to “My Details” appears in blue near the top of the page. Once on this page you will be able to update your email address, name, location, and near the top of that page will be a link to “Change Password”. Follow the prompts and remember to save once you are done.
You will need to locate the Register on the ABS Current Vacancies page.
To begin a new application you will then need to click the “Start New Application” link on the right of the Register. From there you will see prompts for your personal information, which is stored securely. You will also be prompted to login soon after you begin your new application, if you have previously applied for an ABS vacancy you will need to use your email address and password, see the question on how to change/reset your password on this page if you are unable to login. If you have not previously applied for a job with ABS you will need to register yourself to ABS Careers page (eRecruitment). Once you complete the registration details an email will be sent to your email inbox confirming your login details.
After login/registration, you will begin the application form for the Register. Simply answer any and all applicable questions, some fields will be mandatory and are indicated by use of a red asterisk (*) next to the question.
Remember to use the buttons at the bottom of each page to “Save”, or “Save and Continue”.
Upload your resume and any relevant files, such as transcripts, cover letters etc, completing the declaration at the bottom of the page when you are satisfied, Save and Continue.
The last step of the application form requests that you review your application details, there is a “Submit” button on this page; remember to press the Submit button once you are happy with your application. If you do not press submit your application will not be considered, as it won’t be searchable by our hiring managers.
Yes, for the hiring manager to assess your application you will need to include a history of employment, skills, education and any other information you believe to be relevant.
The application form can only take non-password protected files, with the file extension of .pdf, .rtf, .doc – the system will reject all other file types. The larger the file, the longer it will take to upload, so be aware of your formatting and any pictures or tables you include in your documents, as they may increase the file size.
To update your Resume you will need to click on the “Upload” button (beside the Resume field) and select your updated Resume file.
When uploading a new resume you will notice any prior resume file names will remain the same. Your new resume has been uploaded, but will still have your previous version's file name.
No. Once a new Register is open your previous application will no longer be considered even if you have not yet applied to the current Register. Your previous application will remain viewable to you for 12 months in your applications page. If you wish to be considered for temporary/non-ongoing work in the future you will need to apply to the current Register.
You can access a current application to update, continue or withdraw your application at any time. This can be done by logging into the ABS Careers page, going in to “My Profile” and pressing “Edit Application” on the applicable job to be edited.
Once you have submitted your application (refer to "How do I apply to the Register?" for more information about submitting an application), you will receive an automated email from the ABS Careers system to confirm that your application has been successfully submitted.
Once you have submitted an application, you can withdraw your application at any time. You can do this by logging into the ABS Careers site, selecting your submitted application and clicking on the "Withdraw" button.
Once you have withdrawn your application you cannot reverse this request yourself. If you have withdrawn your application and then changed your mind, you will need to contact the recruitment team to have your application reinstated.
