Public consultation for the 2016 Census

The public consultation process which began in November 2012 is your opportunity to take part in shaping the 2016 Census. Submissions close in May 2013.

Normal services for Census products resume today. 2012 saw a successful early release of first and second release data from the 2011 Census. The next release, in March 2013, will include SEIFA and Remoteness Area data.

Reduced support services during holidays

19 December 2012
The ABS will be closed from midday on 24 December 2012 to 1 January 2013 inclusive. The level of support for Census products may be reduced during this period.

Mesh Block Counts now available

We are pleased to announce that 2011 Mesh block counts for usual resident population and dwellings are available ahead of schedule. You can download these as Excel or CSV files. For more information go to the Mesh Block Counts page.

Mesh Block Counts and TableBuilder third release

Mesh Block Counts for usual resident population and dwellings will be available for download early, on 11 December 2012. Third release data will also be released into TableBuilder early, on 28 March 2013.

Census products updated today

20 November 2012
We are pleased to announce that the TableBuilder Pro database 'Counting Employed Persons, Place of Work' has been expanded to include Place of Enumeration classification, and that Destination Zone geographic areas are now available in TableBuilder Pro.

Community Profiles have been updated to include the Working Population Profile. DataPacks online and DataPack DVDs are now available with second release data for Place of Enumeration, Expanded Community and Working Population profiles.

Updates for Community Profiles, DataPacks and TableBuilder Pro

TableBuilder Pro, Community Profiles, DataPacks online and DataPack DVDs will be updated on 20 November, incorporating Working Population Profile, Expanded Community Profile and Place of Enumeration Profile data.

TableBuilder Pro will also be updated, with Destination Zone geographic areas and an expanded Place of Work database.

In preparation for these updates, TableBuilder and DataPacks Online will be unavailable from 9.30 am to 11.30 am on 20 November.

ABS Registration centre now available

The ABS Registration centre now allows you to register for any ABS product, from a single location in the ABS website.

From 13 November, we are expanding the Registration centre to allow you to register for any ABS product, from a single location in the ABS website. In preparation for this change, TableBuilder, DataPacks Online and the Registration centre will be unavailable from 9.00 am to 11.30 am on Tuesday 13 November.

Public Consultation for the 2016 Census begins today

The ABS today released a publication proposing directions for Australia's 17th national Census, to be held in 2016.

The publication 2016 Census of Population and Housing: Consultation on content and procedures (cat. no. 2007.0) outlines initial ABS views on topics and procedures for the 2016 Census. There is now an opportunity for the public to take part in shaping the 2016 Census.

Second release of 2011 data today!

30 October 2012
Today marks the second release of data from the 2011 Census of Population and Housing.

Data on education, employment and internal migration are now available through various 2011 Census products. Data are also now available by Significant Urban Area and by Section of State/Urban Centre and Localities Structure.

We are pleased to announce that second release data from the 2011 Census will be available in TableBuilder (both Basic and Pro) to registered users from 11.30 am on 30 October.

In preparation for this release, TableBuilder will be unavailable from 9.00 am to 11.30 am on 30 October.

Earlier release of select second release products

We are pleased to announce that select products with 2011 Census data will be available ahead of schedule. TableBuilder (Basic and Pro) and Community profiles, for Place of Enumeration and Expanded, will be available 30 October 2012. DataPacks online for Place of Enumeration, Expanded and Working population profiles will be available 20 November 2012.

Update to DataPacks

17 September 2012DataPacks and the Registration system will be unavailable from 11.30 am to 2.00 pm on Friday 21 September due to updates to the X32 'sequential' DataPack files.

Upgrade to registration system

First release data from the 2011 Census is available in TableBuilder Pro today to registered users.

TableBuilder Pro will contain 2011 Census data on 7 August. In preparation for the release, TableBuilder will be unavailable from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on 7 August. When you log in to 2011 TableBuilder Pro after 11:30 a.m. the first release variables from the 2011 Census will be available for you to generate in any tables you have prepared.

Same-sex couples - more results released

An article on same-sex couples has been released, following high levels of interest since 2011 Census data was released on 21 June. The article covers age patterns, family structures, geographic location, cultural diversity and religion.

TableBuilder 2011 shells available now!

You are now able to access 2011 shell databases for TableBuilder. These do not contain data but will allow you to prepare for the release of 2011 Census data as soon as they become available.

Order 2011 DataPacks on DVD now

DataPacks will be available on DVDs from 21 June 2012 and can be pre-ordered now. DVDs will be mailed to you or can be collected from your ABS state or territory office.
