About the Census

The Census is the largest form of information gathering conducted in Australia – it tells us about our way of life and helps us plan for the future

What is the Census?

The Census is conducted every 5 years under the authority of the Census and Statistics Act 1905 and aims to measure accurately the number of people and dwellings in Australia on Census Night, and a range of their key characteristics.

Service Charter

Our Service Charter explains what you can expect from us. It includes our obligations, your rights and what to do if you’re not satisfied with our service.

Privacy and confidentiality

By law Census information is kept strictly private and confidential. The confidentiality of your data is protected by the Census and Statistics Act 1905 and the Privacy Act 1988.

2016 Census

The next Census of Population and Housing is scheduled for August 2016 and planning is well underway.The ABS has begun a consultation process with Census data users and the general public.
