Wollongong District Manager needed for first digital Census

6 November 2015 | NSW/140

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking for a 2016 Census District Manager for the Wollongong region.

Head of the 2016 Census Program Duncan Young said this is a once-in-five year opportunity to play a key role in Australia’s largest peace-time logistical exercise, and make an important contribution to the Wollongong community.

“The Census provides an important statistical snapshot of our nation,” Mr Young said.

“For example, the 2011 Census showed that 37,082 people live in Wollongong and the median age is 33. Equally, there are 8,695 families living in the region, with each family containing an average of 1.7 children.

“This information supports future funding decisions for services and infrastructure, including housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals, and the environment.

“As a District Manager, you will help make sure everyone is included in the Census so the ABS accurately captures this information again in 2016.

“You will also be part of one of the biggest online events in Australia, with 65 per cent of Australian households expected to complete the Census online next year,” he said.

2016 Census field staff will need to be tech-savvy and are expected to use their own computer, smartphone or tablet.

District Managers must have good communication skills, know their local community well, and have strong project and people management skills.

They will earn up to $50.15 per hour for up to 10 months. Working hours are flexible.

Across New South Wales (NSW), 23 District Managers will supervise the recruitment and training of up to 750 Area Supervisors and up to 6,900 Field Officers.

The District Manager applicants must be Australian citizens or have the legal right to work in Australia. Applicants must also hold a valid driver’s licence.
