29,000 Census Collectors hit the streets of Australia

29 July 2011 | CO/34

Knock knock. Who’s there? The 2011 Census of Population and Housing.

Starting today, 29,000 Census Collectors will start delivering approximately 14.2 million Census forms.

With their trademark yellow satchel bag in hand and photo identification, Census Collectors will hand deliver Census forms and eCensus access codes to each of Australia’s 9.8 million households.

From the frosty hills of remote Tasmania to the arid desert of the Northern Territory, Census Collectors will travel by foot, car, boat, plane or any means necessary to make sure that on Census night, Tuesday, 9 August, every person in Australia is accurately counted.

Head of the Population Census program, Paul Lowe says you can expect a knock on the door shortly.

“The delivery process will take just over a week, with forms being delivered right up until 7 August. After Census night, the process of picking up the completed forms starts so have your form ready,” Mr Lowe says.

Mr Lowe believes many people will take advantage of eCensus, the convenient online way to complete your Census form.

“Completing your Census online is quick and easy, plus, once submitted, your Collector will be alerted by SMS and will not have to return to your house,” Mr Lowe adds.

It is expected that 30 per cent of the population will choose the eCensus option.
