200 Census Collectors hit the streets of the Sutherland Shire

29 July 2011 | NSW/64

200 Census Collectors will hit the streets of the Sutherland Shire today to deliver Census forms to every house, apartment and nursing home to ensure every person is accurately counted on Census night, Tuesday, 9 August.

This year Australia is marking 100 years of national Census taking and local Shire resident Mrs Florence Denning, who celebrated her 106th birthday this week, has been included in every single Census count.

"My mum would have filled out my first Census form for me when I was a little six year old girl," says Mrs Denning.

Locals may recognise Mrs Denning at their local church on Sundays. Her faith has been an important part of her life and she never misses a Sunday service.

"My son lives in Cronulla and takes me to the Uniting Church there every Sunday. Every other Sunday, my grandson takes me to the Church of England in Sutherland."

Another important part of Mrs Denning's life has been bushwalking and hiking which she attributes to her long and healthy life.

"I know every part of the National Park like the back of my hand. The Royal National Park is definitely my favourite.

"Good healthy exercise keeps you fit to the core of your body."

Mrs Denning will have another reason to celebrate soon.

"I am expecting my 13th great grandchild in August. Hopefully he will make the Census count on 9 August," adds Ms Denning.
