Census data - believe it or not!

Forget Ripley’s believe it or not, in the past 100 years Census data has revealed some amazing and quirky facts about Australia and the way we live.
  • In 1971, 9,815,061 people had a TV.
  • There were 619 oyster farmers in Australia in 1966.
  • The 2006 Census recorded that 400 different languages were spoken in homes throughout Australia.
  • 121 people aged 100+ years stated they did 30 or more hours of unpaid domestic work in the week prior to the 2006 Census.
  • According to 2006 Census data, Australia has 670 parking inspectors.
  • 70 per cent of the population counted in the NT in the 1933 Census were male.
  • Six per cent of the Australian population worked in the Agriculture industry in 1947.
  • In 1966 there were 36 people who listed their occupation as ‘whaler’.
  • In 1991, 60 per cent of Australia’s population lived in either New South Wales or Victoria.
  • 133 people stated they spoke an Invented Language at Home in 1996.
  • 12 people were employed in the industry of squid jigging in 2001.
  • 2579 people stated their occupation as ‘Media Presenter’ in 2001.
