ABS seeking up to 500 Data Processing Officers for Canberra Office

03 June 2016 | ACT/09

Are you interested in joining the powerhouse of Australia’s largest logistical exercise? The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking up to 500 people to assist with data processing in its Canberra based Data Operations Centre.

The Data Centre will process and code responses collected from close to 10 million households and 24 million people during the 2016 Census of Population and Housing.

The majority of the Processing Officer positions will be on a full-time basis, but part-time positions will also be available for the temporary roles, starting July 2016 and finishing August 2017.

Head of the Census Program, Duncan Young, said Census Processing Officers will have a critical role.

“The Census provides an important statistical snapshot of Australia every five years. Raw data collected across Australia on Census night will be quality assured and coded by the Data Operations Centre.

“This quality-assured data will then support critical funding decisions for services and infrastructure including housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals, and the environment,” Mr Young said.

Successful applicants can earn upwards of $25.06 per hour and will be expected to work effectively in a close-knit team, have a can-do attitude, and meet tight deadlines.

“The ABS will provide on-the-job training for all successful applicants. Data processing experience is not essential. People with a basic level of computer skills can apply,” Mr Young said.

All Data Operations Centre staff will need to uphold the highest standards of data confidentiality. Successful applicants will be required to undergo a number of pre-employment checks, which will include a police-records check.

People of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply (people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds).Applicants must be Australian citizens or have the legal right to work in Australia.
