170 Census Collectors hit the roads of the North West Slopes29 July 2011 | NSW/58170 Census Collectors will hit the streets and roads of the North West Slopes to deliver Census forms to every home, farm and lodging in the region and ensure every person is accurately counted on Census night, Tuesday, 9 August. Overseeing a team of six Census Collectors in this area is Gwen Clark, who has been working on the Census since 1976 and has stepped up to be an Area Supervisor for the first time. “I love it. I’m on cloud nine,” smiled Gwen. “My work as a Census Collector on past Censuses was very satisfying and to be rewarded with a Supervisor’s role means it has been all worthwhile.” Gwen’s territory takes in Gunnedah, Curlewis, Premer, Tambar Springs, Spring Ridge, and Mullaley and crosses three shires (Liverpool Plains, Warrumbungle and Gunnedah). Gwen looked for Collectors who with the required amount of dedication. “Candidates had to convince me they were up to the task. I had to look for Collectors with different strengths as I have to send my Collectors out into very different areas. "For instance there is no mobile phone coverage in some areas and roads which turn to bog in rain." Gwen is truly passionate about the importance of the Census. “I believe the Census is absolutely necessary, especially in the country. "A lot of country folk believe, rightly or wrongly, infrastructure planning stops at the mountains. Trains are infrequent and medical services are limited. By completing the Census we will continue to build a case for the services we require," Gwen adds.
