150 Census Collectors hit the streets of Hornsby

29 July 2011 | NSW/43

Census Collectors will hit the streets and challenging terrain of the Hornsby local government area today to deliver Census forms to every home, apartment block and farm.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has employed 150 Census Collectors to travel to every corner of Hornsby and surrounds to ensure every person is accurately counted on Census night, Tuesday, 9 August.

40 year old local resident and fire fighter Duncan Amour will supervise the counting of Berowra residents in this year’s Census and having grown up in the region he knows the area well.

“This is my backyard. As a local fire fighter at the Berowra Fire & Rescue station you get to know all the nooks and crannies. I’m also a Rover Advisor and one of my hobbies happens to be exploring caves around the area,” Duncan says.

Duncan worked as a Census Collector in 2006 and has stepped up this year as an Area Supervisor leading a team of eight Collectors.

When recruiting his team of Census Collectors, Duncan looked for people could handle the challenges that come with the unique terrain.

“Berowra is surrounded by national park and many of the homes are on a high ridge and some are quite difficult to access.

"I needed a team of Collectors who know the area, the back-roads and were friendly and approachable. This area is more country than city."

This year’s Census will be the second time people can complete the Census online, using the eCensus.

“I know a lot of households in Berowra have access to the internet and I’ll definitely be encouraging people to complete the Census in this way.”
