Number of Employees
| Number of Employees (EMPP)This variable describes the number of employees (in ranges) employed by owner-managers. Number of Employees (EMPP) is used to help understand the nature of self-employment (whether working on own account, or as an employer), and the characteristics of small business owners. The question relating to EMPP was first asked in the 2006 Census. Further information on Census Topics 1911-2011, can be found in How Australia Takes a Census (cat. no. 2903.0). The non-response rate for EMPP was 1.7% (2.1% in 2006). Unlike some other Census variables, the non-response rate for EMPP is not affected by persons who were imputed into dwellings that did not return a Census Form, as this variable is only applicable to owner-managers of incorporated or unincorporated enterprises (see Employment Types - EMTP), that is 15.1% of all employed persons. The responses to this question are captured automatically from mark box responses on the form so the risk of processing error is minimal. Sample checks are undertaken to ensure an acceptable level of quality. In a small proportion of cases (testing has indicated that this is less than 1.0%), respondents provided an incorrect number of responses (for EMPP, respondents were asked to only mark one response). In these cases, responses were accepted in the order they appeared on the form and the extra responses were rejected. EMPP can be used in conjunction with Employment Type (EMTP) to obtain an estimate of 'own account workers' (owner-managers of unincorporated enterprises that have no employees). This was a category in the 2001 version of Labour Force Status (LFSP). The question on Number of Employees is not asked on the Interviewer Household Form (IHF), a form type primarily used in discrete Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia. Persons enumerated on this form type are automatically given a value of 'Not Stated' for this variable.
