Census Collectors hit the streets and roads of the North West Slopes

29 July 2011 | NSW/74

170 Census Collectors will hit the streets and roads of the North West Slopes today to deliver Census forms to every home, farm and lodging in the region and ensure every person is accurately counted on Census night, Tuesday, 9 August.

Mayor of Liverpool Plains Ian Lobsey has been working on the Census for 30 years and understands the importance of getting an accurate Census count.

"Census figures are vital to the development of an area and I see this first hand being involved with the Council - we use Census data extensively."

"A true count of the number of people living in any given region is critical as funding for services such as health clinics and schools are planned using Census figures," says Mr Lobsey.

Ian and his team of Census Collectors will be responsible for the delivery of Census forms to Quirindi, Willow Tree, Murrurundi and Wallabadah and expects to encounter a good willingness to cooperate.

"I've had a great deal of support for the Census over the years and have had success with turning around people who are unsure about participating by explaining the benefits of the Census.

"In fact, I'm more concerned about my Collectors being invited in for too many cups of tea which may hinder progress somewhat. That's what it's like out in this country."

Ian is strongly encouraging the local residents to jump online and complete their Census forms using the eCensus.

"People in the bush are online savvy and if privacy is an issue, this is the best way to overcome it and Census Collectors will also not need to return to pick up your form," Ian adds.
