The following section uses data from Census counts, as well as final estimates of the resident Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous populations. Among the Indigenous population in 2006, 90% (463,706) were of Aboriginal origin only, 6% (or 33,267) were of Torres Strait Islander origin only, and 4% (or 20,070) were of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin.
