Employment Sector
In the 2006 Census, 46% of Indigenous people aged 15 years and over were employed: of these 93% were employees, 6% were self employed and 1% were contributing family workers.
For non-Indigenous workers 82% were employees, 17% were self employed and 2% were contributing family workers.

Indigenous people were most likely to be employed in the private sector (74%), followed by the State/Territory and Local governments (12% and 10% respectively) and the Commonwealth government (4%).
For non-Indigenous persons the private sector employed 86% with the State/Territory and Commonwealth governments employing 9% and 4% respectively and Local government 1%.

At the time of the Census, Indigenous females were more likely to be employed by State/Territory government (15.9%) than local or Commonwealth government (7.6% and 5.4% respectively). Indigenous males on the other hand were more likely to be employed by local government (11.5%) than Commonwealth or State/Territory (3.3% and 8.3% respectively).
Both male and female non-Indigenous persons were more likely to be employed by State/Territory government (6.4% and 12.1% respectively) than other government sectors.
