Individual Income
At the time of the 2006 Census, the median gross income for all Indigenous people was $278 per week compared to $473 for all non-Indigenous people.
The median income for Indigenous persons aged 15-24 years was $191 per week. For those aged 25-44, the median weekly income was $374 per week and for Indigenous persons aged 45 years and over, it was $283.
A similar pattern was observed in the non-Indigenous population, where the median gross weekly income was $209 for those aged 15-24 years, $684 for those aged 25-44 years and $420 for those aged 45-64 years.
However the median income for non-Indigenous people in the prime working age group (25–44 years) was much higher than the corresponding Indigenous median income ($684 compared to $374).

As well as age, employment status, occupation and hours of work also affect income. When median income of those in full--time employment are compared, the difference between Indigenous and non-Indigenous income is less ($702 for Indigenous persons and $884 for non-Indigenous persons).
Among Indigenous people working full-time, median weekly incomes for Professionals ($942) and Managers ($896) were highest, and the median weekly income for Labourers ($552) was lowest.
This pattern was also observed in the non-Indigenous population. However, Indigenous people in full-time work reported lower incomes than non-Indigenous people in the same occupation working full-time across all occupations.
The largest percentage difference in median weekly income between Indigenous and non-Indigenous workers was found for Professionals and Sales Workers. The occupation where the median gross weekly income of Indigenous and non-Indigenous workers was closest, was Machinery Operators and Drivers.
