Characteristics of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Households
The following table presents some selected characteristics of Indigenous households and Other households. Other households include non-Indigenous and those where Indigenous status was not stated.

(a) Based on place of usual residence.
(b) Indigenous households are defined as those containing at least one Indigenous person, excluding visitors, who identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin. Households that fall outside this definition are referred to as 'other households'.
(c) Includes persons who did not state their Indigenous status.
(d) Equivalised household income takes differences in household size and composition into account so that comparisons can be made between different households (for example a lone person household and a household with 2 adults and 3 children).

As the table above shows, Indigenous households had lower medians in the categories of weekly income, loan repayments and weekly rent. The median age of persons in Indigenous households was markedly lower than the median age in other households (20 compared to 37 respectively). On average, the Indigenous household had more persons usually resident (3.4 compared to 2.6 for other households), with a slightly higher average number of persons per bedroom (1.3 compared to 1.1 for other households).
