    Changes Over Time

    The 1971 Census officially included Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia's population count for the first time. There were 115,953 indigenous persons recorded in the 1971 Census count.
    Between the 2001 and 2006 Census, the Indigenous population increased by 11%. The non-Indigenous population increased by 3.8% during the same period. Over the past 20 years, the Census count of Indigenous people has doubled. Much of this increase in the Indigenous population can be explained by natural increase (births minus deaths). Other non-demographic factors, such as improvements in Census collection methods and more people self identifying as Indigenous, also contribute to the growth.
