Which count to use?

The Census of Population and Housing is a count of all people and dwellings in Australia on Census night. The Census form asks whether individuals are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin. The responses to this question help to inform the Australian public about the size, composition, geographic distribution and socio-economic characteristics of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.

While every effort is made to ensure full coverage of all people and dwellings in Australia, it is inevitable that some people will be missed or counted more than once, while other people may not complete the Indigenous status question (Census of Population and Housing - Details of Undercount, cat no 2940.0); for this reason, the Census count of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians may not be a full count of this population. The Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) estimates the net undercount that has occurred on Census night.

The Estimated Resident Population (ERP) is an official estimate of the population of Australia. In Census years it is compiled based on Census counts after adjusting for net undercount and Australian residents who were temporarily absent on Census night. The ERP for the total Australian population is updated quarterly, using administrative data on births, deaths and migration. A similar approach is used to calculate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Population Estimates for Census years only; for non-census years, ABS produces projections for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population based on assumptions about fertility, mortality and migration in this population.
