Business demography information provides a relatively broad picture of trends associated with business growth (or decline). This information is based on business counts and/or characteristics. It describes the structure and performance of businesses and links key variables of interest for like businesses. Business demography information is used by a wide range of organisations and individuals, including Government stakeholders (Federal and State Government Departments and Agencies), private enterprises, international organisations, academics and researchers, as well as the wider community, for a number of policy and research initiatives.
ABS business demography statistics focus on measuring changes in the counts and characteristics of different types of businesses (e.g. small businesses, home-based businesses) and changes in the demographics of business operators (e.g. age, gender, country of origin). Business characteristics include topics relating to employment, growth and innovation, finance, export activity, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) involvement.
As business demographic information is available from a number of different sources, it should be noted that the range of business demographics data may not be comparable in terms of scope and coverage. Users should therefore be aware of these limitations when making comparisons between data in business demography publications. |
