MIGRANT DATA MATRICES

The Migrant Data Matrices (cat. no 3415.0) provide an easier and quicker method of finding ABS migrant and ethnicity related data. Migrant related data items from a range of ABS collections are shown in a series of matrices with direct links to datacubes. Care must be taken in comparing data from different collections presented in the Matrices due to differences in survey methodology, definitions and reference periods. This release of the Migrant Data Matrices incorporates all 18 data cubes from the first release plus 20 data cubes of more recently released data.

GUIDE TO MIGRANT STATISTICAL SOURCES

The Guide to Migrant Statistical Sources (cat. no. 3414.0) is a useful way of finding and accessing relevant data on migrants and ethnicity. It contains information on almost 100 data collections, including a wide range of ABS surveys as well as data sourced from academic institutions and federal and state government departments. These data sources have been brought together in one place so they can be easily searched by title or by topic. A brief overview of each data collection is provided, together with how to access the data or obtain more information. The Guide will be updated on a regular basis and we are keen to include additional sources. If you are aware of other migrant related data sources that may be of interest, please email the information to: <migrant.statistics.unit@abs.gov.au>.

PERSPECTIVES ON MIGRANTS

The National Migrant Statistics Unit, through the Perspectives on Migrants (cat. no. 3416.0) series, provides informed commentary to assist those interested in issues related to migrant and ethnic population groups within Australia.

Released twice yearly, the latest edition contains two articles that use data from the ABS Labour Force supplementary surveys to explore the interaction of migrants with the Australian labour market:
  • Job Search Experience of Migrants; and
  • Forms of Employment - A Comparison of Australian and Overseas Born Persons.

GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Migration, Australia, 2007-08 (cat. no. 3412.0) brings together statistics on international migration into and out of Australia, interstate migration within Australia and information on overseas-born residents in Australia. Migration is described in the context of the Australian Government's migration program and comparisons are provided with other countries. The latest edition includes:
    • summary information on the 'Main Features' of the publication;
    • a feature article, 'Population Mobility';
    • a media release, 'Over one quarter of Australians were born overseas'; and
    • data cubes.
  • Labour Force Status and Other Characteristics of Recent Migrants, Australia, Nov 2007 (cat. no. 6250.0) provides information about recent migrants, that is people who were born overseas and arrived in Australia during the 10 years to November 2007. The publication includes a summary of findings and data on employment, difficulties faced in finding a job, length of time taken to find work, unemployment, labour force participation, qualifications and household income for migrants and temporary residents.

CENSUS DATA
  • Census TableBuilder (cat. no. 2065.0) is an online tool which allows users to create their own custom tables by accessing 2006 Census variables. Person, family and dwelling classifications are available for all ABS geographic areas. Unlike CDATA Online, TableBuilder is not topic based so you will be able to add any combination of variables to your table. TableBuilder completes the suite of products from the 2006 Census and is available free to end users under the ABS/Universities Australia Agreement or as a charged subscription service to individuals.

  • CDATA Online (cat. no. 2064.0) is a free online tool which combines information on Australian society from the 2006 Census, with web graphing and mapping capability. It allows you to create your own tables of Census data on a range of different topics – including ethnicity. With CDATA Online, you can cross-tabulate chosen Census data variables to produce a table which can also be viewed as a graph or a thematic map. You can access data for areas as small as a Collection District (approximately 225 households) or as large as an entire state or territory or all of Australia. A detailed user manual is also available.
