Queensland occupies the north-eastern portion of the Australian continent located between 10° and 29° south latitude and between 138° and 154° east longitude. Just over half of the total area - 1,734,157 square kilometres - is north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Of the eight states and territories of Australia, Queensland ranks second in area and third in population.

Queensland is a large and diverse state, with local climates varying from wet tropical in the north, with some areas on the coast experiencing up to 4,000 mm of rain a year, to dry semi-desert in the south west where as little as 150 mm may fall. Sunny days with cold and frosty nights are characteristic of the inland winter, whereas along the coast winter days are mild with only occasional frost. During October, when increasing day length combines with lack of cloudiness, the Birdsville -Boulia-Windorah area averages over 11 hours of sunshine with around 5% of the state averaging over 10 hours and the remainder recording at least 8 hours of sunshine.

Queensland is unique in that its own State Parliament has only one house - the Legislative Assembly. Local government derives its powers from Acts passed by the State Parliament. The capital city is Brisbane.
