Northern Territory (NT) comprises a land area of approximately 1,346,200 km˛. It is the third largest of the states and territories after Western Australia and Queensland, yet is sparsely populated with approximately 1% of Australia's total population. The ABS NT office is located in the capital city of Darwin on Australia's northern coast. Darwin, said to be Australia's gateway with South East Asia, is as close to Singapore and Manila as it is to Sydney and Melbourne.
Darwin City is the commercial and administrative centre of the Territory. Alice Springs is the largest regional population centre outside Darwin and is the base for significant tourism activities in central Australia. Mining, tourism and the Australian Defence Force are major contributors to the NT economy.
The NT has two distinct climatic regions. The northern region of the NT, referred to as the Top End, experiences monsoonal tropics with two official seasons. The 'Wet' season occurs between October and April and has high humidity and heavy rainfall, while the 'Dry' season runs from May to September and receives much less rain and slightly cooler and dryer weather. In contrast, the southern region of the NT is semi-arid to arid and experiences cool dry winters and hot dry summers.
