The ABS and Finance Statistics
The Australian financial sector performs a pivotal role in providing credit to all other sectors in the Australian economy. An efficient financial sector is essential in financing the operations of the economy through both intermediation (i.e. borrowing the money from one sector to on-lend to another) and through auxiliary financial services such as securities broking and funds management, where the financial enterprise facilitates the smooth processing of funds from one sector to another.
The ABS collects a wide range of financial statistics both directly from financial institutions and indirectly via administrative by-product or publicly available reports to compile a financial profile (assets and liabilities) of each subsector of the economy and the market (issuers and holders) for each conventional financial instrument.
The Financial Statistics section is responsible for collecting these statistics and is part of the Macroeconomics and Integration Group (MIG). |
