In recognition of the importance of culture, sport and other recreation to both Australia's development and progress, and the social and physical wellbeing of it's population, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has developed a substantial body of data relating to these areas. A range of household and business surveys have gathered data about topics of interest such as participation, attendance, expenditure and the activity of businesses operating in the fields of culture and recreation. In addition, administrative by-product data have been utilised to produce information about other topics such as government funding.
The ABS established the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS) in 1991, and since this time the centre has been maintained with ongoing partnership support from with the Cultural Ministers Council and the Sport and Recreation Ministers Council. The work of the NCCRS includes:
- consultation with users about data needs
- the coordination of statistical output
- statistical analyses of relevant data
- the development and enhancement of new and existing data collections
- the development and application of appropriate classifications and standards.
