USING SOCIAL CAPITAL STATISTICS

AVAILABILITY

The ABS framework for collecting information about people's networks and community participation is contained in Information Paper: Measuring Social Capital - An Australian Framework and Indicators (cat. no. 1378.0).

Data for some indicators have been released in Aspects of Social Capital, Australia (cat. no. 4911.0), which points to a range of ABS sources. The main dataset comes from the General Social Survey (GSS), published in General Social Survey, Summary Results, Australia (cat. no. 4159.0) and an associated set of state tables. The Time Use Surveys, published in How Australians Use Their Time (cat. no. 4153.0), provide information on social and community participation, on time spent alone, with family and friends, and on voluntary work and care. The Survey of Employment Arrangements, Retirement and Superannuation, published in Employment Arrangements, Retirement and Superannuation (cat. no. 6361.0), makes a substantial contribution to understanding people's care responsibilities and whether those who are employed have workplace arrangements that allow them to combine employment and caring responsibilities.

For small areas and populations, the 2006 Census has comparative information on voluntary work, caring for children and caring for people with a disability.

Confidentialised unit record files (CURFs) have been created for all of the above surveys, to enable more intensive analysis. Information about CURF availability and how to apply for access is available.

For each survey, as well as the data publication, a set of information about the survey has been released. These publications provide the information you need to understand the quality of the particular survey, including details about sample design, collection procedures and response rates, types of error and procedures used to limit the risk of non-sampling error.
