Population ageing - where older age groups make up an increasing proportion of the population - is occurring in Australia and most developed countries. Australia’s population is projected to age rapidly over the next several decades. The main factors driving the change are declining fertility rates, increases in life expectancy, and shifts in the level and composition of migration. Changes associated with population ageing impact on all aspects of social and economic life.
This theme page provides a guide to ABS data on the ageing of the Australian population, and relevant non-ABS sites. This theme page is administered by the National Ageing Statistics Unit on behalf of the many areas of the ABS which produce ageing-relevant statistics. |
