Spotlight on National Accounts: Unpaid work and the Australian economy (cat. no. 5202.0)

The May 2014 issue of the Spotlight on National Accounts was released on Monday 26 May 2014. The focus of this paper is the overall value and growth of unpaid work conducted by households in Australia, including comparisons to other countries. The value of unpaid work falls outside of the current conventional measures of production, as captured by the Australian System of National Accounts (ASNA). However, measuring the value of unpaid work is a worthwhile pursuit, for when the results are combined with traditional measure of production, a more complete picture of the nation’s economic activities is attained. The latest estimates presented in this paper relate to unpaid work conducted in Australia throughout 2006. This paper also contains detailed tables, which extend and refine unpaid work estimates previously published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for 1992 and 1997.
