The Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) defines manufacturing as, "the physical or chemical transformation of materials or components into new products, whether the work is performed by machinery or by hand". This includes activities undertaken by a manufacturing business that are not in themselves manufacturing activities (e.g. repair or installation of goods produced, administration).
This view of manufacturing measures all of the activities of only those organisations whose principal activity is manufacturing. The manufacturing activities undertaken by private individuals or organisations whose principal activity is not manufacturing are excluded from the ANZSIC definition.
