The service industries sector is defined as all industries other than the goods producing industries (agriculture, mining, manufacturing, electricity, construction, and gas and water supply). In terms of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), the service industries cover wholesale and retail trade, accommodation, cafes and restaurants, transport and storage, communication services, finance and insurance, property and business services, government administration and defence, education, health and community services, cultural and recreational services, and personal and other services.
The ABS produces data on service industries from a variety of programs. In terms of industry data there are two main sources; the annual economic activity survey and the rotating program of service industries collections.
The economic activity survey provides employment, financial information and performance measures at a broad industry level (ANZSIC sub-division) on an annual basis. The rotating program of service industries collections includes specific industry surveys each year. The main focus of these surveys is the size and structure of service industries (at the ANZSIC class and sub ANZSIC class level) in terms of detailed financial information and employment. As well, some activity data is available for most surveys.
ABS National Project Centres responsible for the collection, analysis and dissemination of service industries statistics are located in Canberra, Melbourne and Brisbane. Overall policy direction is provided by Program Management in Canberra.
