Banner: The Australian Health Survey

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is conducting the Australian Health Survey with funding from the Department of Health and Ageing and the National Heart Foundation. For more information go to the Australian Health Survey webpage.

New ABS Statistical Geography - coming soon!

The main statistical geography initiative currently underway is the development of the new Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS), which is based on Mesh Blocks. The ASGS will be effective from July 2011 and will be used in disseminating 2011 Census data and other ABS statistics. The ASGS will be published on 23 December 2010.

Disability and Carers Topics @ a Glance Web pages

The new Disability and Carers Topics @ a Glance webpages were launched on 28 September 2010. The focus of the new design is to make publications and information papers easier to locate.

The subject matter is now grouped into 7 pages:
  • Disability-related surveys: Includes surveys and related information covering disability, ageing and carers.
  • Disabling conditions: Analytical papers that explore the relationship between particular chronic conditions and disability.
  • Carers: Analytical articles examining the personal, social and economic impact of the caring role on people at different stages in their life-cycle.
  • Population groups: Focuses on disability information for a number of population groups including Children, Families, Indigenous Australians and Aged persons.
  • Social indicators: Analysis includes community participation, socioeconomic disadvantage, and trends in disability income support.
  • Research papers and articles: Disability variables, small area estimation and concepts in measuring disability.
  • Other links: Topics @ a Glance pages, Australian and International links.
Under "What's new", links to new publications related to Disability and Carers will be displayed. Watch the Disability and Carers topics pages for new publication releases early in 2011.

WHAT'S NEW OUTSIDE THE ABS

Conference - Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) Care, Social Inclusion & Citizenship Symposium
The Brotherhood of St Laurence held a symposium on care, social inclusion and citizenship in October 2010. The summary report and speaker slides are available in the Research and Policy section of their website.

Positioning Paper - Housing, public policy and social inclusion
The Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) released Positioning Paper 135: Housing, public policy and social inclusion in September 2010. This Positioning Paper is the first output of an AHURI Project on Housing, Public Policy and Social Inclusion which aims to broaden and deepen understanding of the ways in which housing processes interact with social and economic disadvantage and whether, and to what extent, housing and related policies and programs can be effective in ameliorating these disadvantages and promoting social inclusion.

Positioning Paper - Housing assistance, social inclusion and people with disabilities
The Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) released Positioning Paper 131: Housing assistance, social inclusion and people with disabilities in August 2010. This Positioning Paper provides the context for important empirical research on the relationship between housing assistance and social inclusion for people with disabilities.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers (SDAC)
The 2009 Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers is a social survey that collects information about people with a disability, older people and people who provide assistance to older people and people with a disability. A summary publication containing an initial release of data was released on 16 December 2010, Disability, Ageing and Carers, Australia: Summary of Findings, 2009 (cat. no. 4430.0). Further data tables will be progressively added to the initial release between January and April 2011, and a final summary publication consolidating these releases will be released on 28 April 2011, for more information go to the Disability and Carers Topics @ a Glance page.

Household Expenditure Survey (HES) and Survey of Income and Housing (SIH)
The Household Expenditure Survey and Survey of Income and Housing were combined for 2009-10 and enumeration is now complete, the results are expected to become available from late 2011.

General Social Survey (GSS)
The enumeration of the 2010 General Social Survey is nearing completion, with results also expected to be available from late 2011.

Age Matters is our informative biannual newsletter that provides the latest ABS news, releases, findings and upcoming events concerning statistics about population ageing and older people. The current issue was released on 13 December 2010 and is available from the Age Matters (cat. no. 4914.0.55.001) web page.
