A Memorandum of Understanding between the ABS and Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) allows access to ABS Basic and Expanded and SNZ Basic CURFs to researchers in universities participating in the ABS/Universities Australia Agreement and the SNZ/CONZUL agreement. The SNZ Statistics for universities page provides more information about the New Zealand agreement.

Applying for access
An Australian university researcher seeking access to a New Zealand CURF must complete, submit and have approved a SNZ CURF Researcher Understanding. This Understanding will contain a statement to the effect that Australian researchers wishing to access New Zealand Basic CURFs will be bound by the access requirements of the Statistics Act as enacted in New Zealand (1975). See the SNZ Access to microdata web page for further information about applying for and using SNZ CURFs. New Zealand CURFs are available to Australian users on CD-ROM only.

A New Zealand university researcher seeking access to an Australian CURF should complete the standard ABS CURF application process on the ABS website. See the How to Apply for Microdata page. Access to Australian CURFs for New Zealand applicants is available in the Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL) only.

Terms and conditions

Breaching the terms and conditions of CURF access in either Australia or New Zealand may result in the imposition of penalties in both countries. Such penalties may include withdrawal of individual or organisational access to all SNZ and ABS CURFs.
