Agenda

Getting value for money from commissioned research

Darren Benham gave a presentation based on his experience, with input from several consultants who have worked with APS agencies, which concentrated on the two main areas which have to be done well; drafting the brief and assessing the consultant's report. His presentation slides and notes are attached:

Discussion following his presentation covered some related issues such as policy relevance, statistical rigour (questionnaire design and sampling issues); The need to prepare briefs with a suitable level of detail and clarity; The use of consultants can be problematic when there is a small pool to choose from, and using consultants to assist in preparing a brief can serve to add another layer of bamboozlement.

Contact with other stats networks

Darren suggested there could be benefits to our network by exchanging information with similar networks operating around the country, such as the Statistical Liaison Officers meetings in Queensland, chaired by the Office of Economic and Social Research.

Jeff Carlton offered to contact ABS regional offices to establish whether there are any other networks operating with similar aims.

General business:
    • venue for next meeting: Peter Thompson offered to host, hopefully at the new HIC accommodation in Griffith, on 30 October.
    • The Christmas function has been booked for 4 December, at ABS House.
    • Rob called for suggestions as to any topics for future meetings.

The meeting concluded at 11.50 am.
