1998 DISABILITY AGEING AND CARERS SURVEY

Data from this survey has been delayed and is now expected to be available in early May. Selected State data will be part of this initial release.

An information session about the survey will be held shortly after the data has been released. If you are interested in this session please contact us.

    CONSTRUCTION
An information session about ABS construction statistics will be held in Sydney on 22 March. This session will provide an overview of the four main building and construction collections. The topics covered will be: the objectives and history of each collection; an overview of the collection strategy; and the range of data available. The session will also cover the strategic directions for construction statistics, in particular the Review of Building Classifications. Phone Bill Markham on (02) 9268 4376 or bill.markham@abs.gov.au for more information.

    QUARTERLY ECONOMY
    WIDE SURVEY
The ABS is developing a coordinated approach to the collection of selected economic data. Statistical collections for sales, inventories, wages and salaries, new capital expenditure and company profits will come under the banner of the Quarterly Economy Wide Survey (QEWS). The new approach will deliver more coherent and consistent data to the Quarterly National Accounts. It will also allow providers more flexibility in the medium and timing of data collection and reporting. For more information on the development of the QEWS please contact Michael Sharpe on (02) 9268 4174.

    OVERTIME STATISTICS
ABS is making changes to the collection of overtime statistics. The May 1999 issue of Job Vacancies and Overtime, Australia (Cat. no. 6354.0) will be the last to contain both overtime and job vacancy data. The August 1999 issue will be retitled Job Vacancies, Australia and will contain statistics on job vacancies only. For information about the availability of other overtime statistics, contact Glynis Franklin-Orrell on (08) 9360 5304.

    DEMOGRAPHY
Demography, NSW, 1997 (Cat no. 3311.1) has been released. This publication brings together NSW data for a number of closely related series of statistics on demography including births, deaths, marriages and divorces. Also included is information on the estimated resident population (ERP) and migration.

    POPULATION GROWTH
Population growth was recorded in 105 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in NSW in the 12 months to June 1998. Regional Population Growth, Australia, 1997-98 (Cat no. 3218.0) provides figures for all LGAs in Australia and identifies those with the largest and fastest population increase and decline. Population changes over 1 year and 5 years are included.

    CAUSES OF DEATH
Both the underlying cause of death as well as data on multiple causes of death are available for the first time. This information is contained in Causes of Death, Australia, 1997 (Cat no. 3303.0). Perinatal data are based on a different definition to past data. The publication also includes for the first time, a number of tables based on standardised death rates.

Selected data are published for regions (Statistical Divisions) at the industry sub-division level. Unpublished data down to the Statistical Local Area level are also available.
