Applications for Census 2001 data - a report from DCITA and NOIE:
Darren Benham
These agencies are making extensive use of Census data, although Darren was unable to be specific about the application he had intended to discuss. The material is yet to be cleared by the Ministers office.
Given the portfolio responsiblities of these agencies, data relating to computers and internet usage is the main area of focus. Other uses he mentioned were for; policy work in respect of smaller populations; compiling an ICT scorecard for each State/Territory; and monitoring and mapping the take up broadband services with a combination of Census and (private) Carrier data.
Any members who are using Census data, or know of applications in their agency are encouraged to contribute to the discussion with a short description of the activity.
General business:
Issues of interest, topics for discussion during 2003
There was a general discussion about possible topics for future meetings. Peter Thomson suggested that presentations by members about what they do has been a useful feature of previous meetings. Several discussion topics were identified - data linkage and the defence personnel census. The meeting also indicated that an update by ABS of progress in the NSS work plan would be of interest, following the feedback given by members last year, as well as the Statistical Coordination Forum, held shortly after this Network meeting.
The meeting concluded at 4:20 pm.
Next meeting
The date for the next meeting is 5 June, from 2 - 4:30pm. The venue will be the new offices of DCITA's Communications Research Unit at the Burns Centre. More details, including the agenda, will be advised closer to the time.
