AGEING IN AUSTRALIA
Census of Population and Housing: Ageing in Australia, 2001 (cat. no. 2048.0) is a new publication due for release in June 2003. It focuses on a range of characteristics of persons aged 65 years and over, as well as exploring the ageing process in Australia, by using Census data to examine trends over time. In addition, the first issue of a new quarterly ABS newsletter called Age Matters, was released in December 2002. ABORIGINAL & TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLE
Population Characteristics, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 2001
(cat. no. 4713.0) is due for release in April 2003. Census data is presented for the following topics: demographic and geographic distribution of the population and its growth in recent years; education and IT use; work; income; housing and transport; living arrangements; and language and religion. GENERAL SOCIAL SURVEY
General Social Survey, Australia, 2002 (cat.no. 4159.0) is due for release in May 2003. The General Social Survey (GSS) is the first of its type conducted by the ABS. Rather than concentrating in detail on a particular area of social concern, the GSS publication provides a wide range of social information about individuals, making it possible to explore linkages between areas of social concern. Topics include: health; housing; education; work; income; financial stress; assets and liabilities; family and community; transport; and crime. For more information contact Graeme Groves on

NSW YEAR BOOK 2003
New South Wales Year Book, 2003 (cat. no. 1300.1) is due for release in May 2003. It provides a comprehensive statistical overview of the prevailing economic and social conditions in NSW in 2002. DOMESTIC WATER USE IN NSW
Domestic Water Use, New South Wales, October 2002 (cat. no. 4616.1) is a new publication due for release in April 2003. It contains data on water using appliances within households in NSW, including: use of washing machines and dishwashers; number of households with swimming pools and fixed watering systems; and use of garden mulch. ENVIRONMENT
Environment by Numbers: Selected Articles on Australia's Environment, 2003 (cat. no. 4617.0) was released in February 2003. This new publication is a collection of articles on the environment featured in Year Book Australia, 2003. Topics include: climate change; Australia's rivers; renewable energy; forest conservation; use of forest products in construction; and the impacts of agriculture, fishing, mining, manufacturing, transport and construction on the environment. SALINITY ON FARMS
Salinity on Australian Farms, 2002 (cat. no. 4615.0) was released in December 2002. Information on salinity and land management was collected in the 2002 Land Management and Salinity Survey and the 2001 Agricultural Census, including data on: the extent of salinity; use of trees, crops, pastures and earthworks for salinity management; and factors influencing land management decisions on farms. REMOTE ACCESS DATA LABORATORY
The Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL) provides improved access to ABS microdata. The ABS now supports a range of methods for accessing microdata in the form of confidentialised unit record files (CURFs), including the newly-developed Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL). The RADL allows approved clients access to extended CURF data at their desktop via a secure Internet link. Strengthened legal and administrative arrangements will also place greater responsibility on individual users to personally sign and observe the terms and conditions under which the microdata is disclosed. The 2001 National Health Survey will be the first CURF to be available through the RADL from late March 2003. NSW DEMOGRAPHIC STATISTICS
Population, Australian States and Territories - Electronic Publication, September Quarter 2002 (cat. no. 3239.0.55.001) was released in February 2003. It provides the final estimated resident population for NSW at June 2001 based on the 2001 Census, including revised estimates for Census net undercount, residents temporarily overseas on Census night, and revised interstate migration and net overseas migration statistics.
Regional Population Growth, Australia and New Zealand, 2002 (cat. no. 3218.0) is due for release in April 2003. It contains final 2001 and preliminary 2002 Local Government Area and Statistical Local Area population estimates. For more information contact Belinda Sloane on

2001 CENSUS NSW DATA
Census of Population and Housing: Urban Centres and Localities, New South Wales & Australian Capital Territories, 2001 (cat. no. 2016.1) due for release in March 2003. It contains selected 2001 Census person, family and dwelling characteristics for all Urban Centres and Localities within New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territories.
Census of Population and Housing: Selected Education and Labour Force Characteristics for Statistical Local Areas, New South Wales and Jervis Bay, 2001 (cat. no. 2017.1) was released in February. It contains 2001 Census population counts and selected Education and Labour Force characteristics for persons in all Statistical Local Areas, Statistical Sub-divisions and Statistical Divisions within New South Wales and Jervis Bay. CRIME & SAFETY
Crime and Safety Survey, Australia, 2002 (cat. no. 4509.0) is due for release in June 2003. It contains summary data on household break-ins, attempted break-ins, motor vehicle theft, personal robberies, assaults and sexual assaults, in the 12 months prior to survey. It provides information on the most recent incident, including whether it was reported to the police, and offender information. Data are classified by demographic characteristics, some state and territory data are provided, and limited comparisons with the 1993, 1995, 1998 Crime and Safety Surveys. PRISONERS
Prisoners in Australia, 2002 (cat. no. 4517.0) was released February 2003. This annual publication contains a wide range of information on prisoners who were in custody on 30 June of the reference year. Topics include: number of people in correctional institutions; imprisonment rates; most serious offence and sentence length; prisoner characteristics (age, sex, Indigenous status); and type of prisoner. SEXUAL ASSAULT
Information Paper: Sexual Assault Information Development Plan (cat. no. 4518.0) is a new publication due for release in April 2003. Contains an information development plan for data relating to sexual assault, and provides: a conceptual framework; identifies key policy issues and information needs; lists data sources available; identifies gaps in data; and proposes strategies to fill these gaps. SUICIDES
Information Paper: Suicides, Australia, 2002 (cat.no. 3309.0.55.001) was released in February 2003. Using data derived from cause of death statistics, this new electronic-only publication provides an update on summary statistics for suicides registered in Australia in 2001. Data are presented by age and sex, method of suicide, and state or territory of usual residence. Numbers of deaths and standardised death rates for 1991 to 2001 are shown for comparison. EXPORTERS & IMPORTERS
International Merchandise Trade, Australia, December Quarter 2002 (cat. no. 5422.0), features an article on 'Australia's Exporters and Importers'. It includes: an estimate of the total number of exporters and importers of goods and services in Australia; number of goods exporters by state of production of exports; and analysis by industry, value of exports/imports, size of business and export patterns. GAMBLING IMPACT ON RETAIL TRADE
Retail Trade, Australia, December 2002 (cat. no. 8501.0), features an article on the 'Contribution of Gambling to Retail Estimates'. It examines the impact on retail estimates of net proceeds received from licensed gambling activities in hotels and licensed clubs, including commission from TAB and Keno transactions in hotels and clubs, net takings from Bingo, net revenue received from poker machines and other electronic gaming machines.
